MoonPay launched PayBox on July 29, offering a payment vault that connects to Claude and ChatGPT through a custom connector. The product lets an assistant prepare payments and other transactions using credentials controlled through the vault. Users choose between approving each transaction with a passkey and allowing actions within limits they define.
The MoonPay announcement lists token swaps, transfers between supported chains and payments among the launch uses. It also describes initial integrations for travel bookings, restaurant reservations and shopping.
The approval mode determines how money moves
In Always Ask mode, each transaction requires passkey approval. Autonomous mode permits the assistant to act within the user’s chosen limits. MoonPay says changing those permissions requires a fresh human passkey approval and access can be revoked.
That choice is central to the product. An assistant may produce a useful plan while misunderstanding the amount, recipient or conditions of a transaction. Approval settings determine whether that mistake remains a proposal or can become an executed action.
For a first use, a narrowly defined task makes the permission easier to inspect: the asset being spent, the destination and the permitted amount should all match the user’s intention.
The vault separates credentials from the conversation
MoonPay says card payments use tokenized credentials so an agent does not receive the raw card number. Wallet keys use threshold cryptography and secure enclaves, with no single party able to obtain the full private key or sign independently under the described design.
Those are the company’s security claims. They explain the intended separation of credentials and agent actions, while users still depend on correct implementation, recovery arrangements and the permissions they grant.
At launch, MoonPay lists Solana and several EVM-compatible chains, including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum and Polygon. Support for additional platforms and financial operations is described as future work.
PayBox brings payment preparation into a familiar chat interface. The consequential part of that convenience remains the boundary between asking an assistant to find an option and authorizing it to spend.
