SoFi announced on May 27 that members could begin buying, selling, holding and converting SoFiUSD inside its app. The company describes the token as a dollar stablecoin issued by SoFi Bank and redeemable one-for-one for US dollars. Full availability is expected by early June as members update the app, rather than reaching every user on the announcement date.
The company’s release lists Ethereum and Solana as supported networks. It presents the app rollout as the first phase of a broader product plan.
Holding the token and using future features are separate
The initial announcement covers access to the token inside the banking app. SoFi also sets out plans for cross-border use, an exchange relationship with Bullish and the ability to convert SoFiUSD into tokenized deposits.
Those planned features should not be treated as available merely because the stablecoin appears in the app. A customer interested in a particular transfer or conversion still needs that function to be enabled and its terms to apply.
The proposed deposit conversion deserves particular care. SoFi says separate deposit-account terms would apply to deposits intended to earn interest and access deposit insurance. That planned product is distinct from simply holding the stablecoin.
A familiar interface can hide a different asset type
Putting a stablecoin beside established banking products makes it easier to find and use. It can also make the differences between those products less obvious at a glance.
SoFi says it maintains liquid assets to support outstanding SoFiUSD and uses regular independent attestations. Those are statements about the token’s backing and reporting. Users should still distinguish the token, the network carrying it and any separate deposit product into which it might later be converted.
For the app’s existing users, the immediate change is access to another way of holding and moving dollar-denominated value. The more ambitious payment uses in the roadmap will need to be assessed when they become available.
